Meet the Founder
Kevin Schmidt is a government relations and strategic affairs executive with experience across Congress, the executive branch, and global business leadership. He has led policy engagement, stakeholder strategy, and external affairs initiatives supporting highly regulated businesses in the security, energy, medical, and industrial sectors. As founder of The Anvil Group, Kevin advises companies on bipartisan issues that include AI, energy, national security and health care.
Kevin previously served as Vice President and Head of U.S. Government Relations for Smiths Group plc, a $3.9 billion global technology company. Smiths Group is a world leader in the practical application of advanced technologies, delivering innovative products and services across security and inspection, medical, communications, and engineered components markets, with a growing focus on advancing energy solutions. In this role, he supported a manufacturing footprint across 30 states and policy engagement and partnerships. He managed significant consulting relationships and millions in budget.
Previously, Kevin was a presidential appointee to the Director of Intelligence and Operations at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, where he acted as the President’s and Secretary’s liaison to Congress. He worked closely with bipartisan leadership in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.
Early in his career, he served as a professional staff member on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI), where he conducted bipartisan oversight of the U.S. Intelligence Community, including the CIA, FBI, and NSA, and the $70 billion National Intelligence Program. His work on HPSCI contributed to landmark legislation creating the Department of Homeland Security and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. He began his public service as a congressional aide, handling Social Security, Medicare, healthcare, and veterans’ issues.
Kevin was appointed by the Governor of Maryland and confirmed by the Maryland General Assembly to the Board of Trustees of Howard Community College (HCC). In that role, he oversaw HCC’s $129 million budget supporting more than 29,000 students. During his tenure, the college earned the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in education—the nation’s only Presidential award for performance excellence.
Kevin holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from The Catholic University of America and an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts from Mitchell College.
Kevin enjoys blacksmithing, mountain biking and hiking with his rescue dog Honey, named for his wife’s beekeeping hobby. Kevin has been married to his wife Nikki for 23 years and they are ridiculously proud of their sons James, a senior at the University of Maryland, College Park, and Joey, a freshman at Towson University. Kevin and his family live in Ellicott City, Maryland.
